National DNA Day Celebration & Heart Dissection | The Health Museum
Grades 5–9 recommended, other grades welcome
Registering for Junior Doctors Program - DNA Day & Heart Dissection
DNA Day Celebration is for Elementary Students too
Date: Saturday, April 25, 2026
Time: 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Location: The Health Museum, Houston, Texas
Join us on April 25 in celebration of National DNA Day! Students will explore the fascinating world of DNA and genomics through engaging hands-on activities, followed by an exciting heart dissection that connects molecular biology to human anatomy.
Following the Heart Dissection, during the summer or a bit later, we plan to launch a Heart Disease Series, which will provide students with deeper insights into cardiovascular health. This series is expected to include opportunities for students to interact with heart disease patients, either in person or via Zoom, offering meaningful real-world perspectives on patient care and medical practice.
For April 25:
Students will:
Explore DNA and genomics through fun activities and guided discussions
Engage with clinical research scientists, learning how discoveries translate into new treatments
Visit the “Journey to End Cancer” exhibit, gaining insight into cancer research, prevention, and future therapies
Participate in the Junior Doctors Program, including a hands-on heart dissection to understand human anatomy in a tangible way
This immersive program combines education, inspiration, and hands-on discovery—helping students connect science concepts to real-life medical applications.
Program Schedule & Options:
• DNA Day Celebration (11:00 AM – 1:00 PM)
Hands-on activities, lecture, and interactive exploration of genomics.
• Junior Doctors – Heart Dissection (2:00 PM – 4:00 PM)
Hands-on heart dissection experience focused on anatomy and disease.
• Full Experience (11:00 AM – 4:00 PM)
Participate in both sessions for a full day of immersive learning, including a supervised museum exploration and lunch break (1–2 PM) with peer interaction. Students may bring their own lunch or purchase food at the museum. For students under age 12, museum policy requires a registered parent or adult guardian to be present—please see the registration form for details.
National DNA Day commemorates two landmark scientific achievements:
Discovery of the DNA Double Helix (April 25, 1953)
On this date, James Watson and Francis Crick published their groundbreaking paper describing the double-helix structure of DNA in the journal Nature, with critical contributions from Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins.
Completion of the Human Genome Project (April 2003)
April 25 also marks the successful completion of the Human Genome Project, an international effort to map and sequence all human genes, revolutionizing modern genetics and medicine.
National DNA Day was officially established in 2003 by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The goal is to promote public understanding of genetics, genomics, and their impact on health and society. Read more about National DNA Day
Schools, universities, museums, and research institutions celebrate National DNA Day through:
Hands-on science activities and experiments
Educational workshops and lectures
Career exploration in genetics and biomedical sciences
Community outreach events
Student essay and poster contests
Discover how the heart works and explore the foundations of human health!
The Junior Doctors Program – Heart Dissection: The Architecture of Life is an engaging, hands-on learning experience designed for students interested in medicine and human biology, and health sciences. Through interactive activities and expert-led sessions, students explore the structure and function of the human heart and gain insight into how different body systems work together to sustain life.
No prior lab or medical experience is required—just curiosity and an interest in learning about medicine and the human body.
Date: Sunday, April 25, 2026
Time: 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Location: The Health Museum, Houston, Texas

The Health Museum - The Journey to End Cancer: From Cause to Cure
Groundbreaking exhibition on cancer breakthroughs
This exhibition is an innovative new science exhibition on cancer – exploring groundbreaking research, advanced medical technologies, and promising new therapies.
Designed for both adults and children, this 5,000-square-foot exhibition is full of multimedia experiences, thought-provoking science interactives, dynamic animations, stunning data visualizations, and inspiring first-person videos to engage and empower exhibit-goers.
Guests play a pattern-copying game that demonstrates how some DNA changes leading to cancer result from “copy and paste” errors when cells replicate.
Guests step into one of the exhibition’s three-story pods. Here, visitors learn how treatment is deeply personal, yet never a solo journey. Each powerful video shares stories from survivors, their families, doctors and nurses, and behind-the-scenes staff – highlighting collaborations and celebrating those who play a role.
